It was a night for honors on Dec. 11 at the Wetzel County Board of Education’s regular meeting. Several students were honored for various accomplishments, while two of the county’s high schools were also recognized for outstanding achievements.

Valley and Paden City high schools were recognized with their respective principals, J.C. Kimble and Jay Salva, present to receive awards from the West Virginia Board of Education and West Virginia Department of Education.

Valley High School was recognized for having the highest Post-Secondary Achievement in the state. Ninety-four percent of last year’s seniors were either a completer, passed a college class, or had an AP class.

Meanwhile, Paden City High School was recognized for its Four-Year Graduation Rate. Paden City Principal Jay Salva stated that Paden City and Valley high schools were two of only 51 schools being honored by the state.

The honors are a result of the new West Virginia Schools Balanced Scorecard.

Magnolia High School’s Pat Mirandy, Sebastian Stickler, and Mike Hamrick were honored Dec. 11, by the Wetzel County Board of Education, for being named to the 2018 West Virginia Class-A All-State Football. The three are standing with MHS Head Coach Doc Chapman, along with Wetzel County Board of Education members and Superintendent Ed Toman.

Paden City was also in the limelight Dec. 11 due to its PCHS Wildcat Band. The Wetzel County Board of Education recognized each band member for earning the Blue Division (small band) Grand Championship at the WV Marching Band Invitational. Mr. Randall Reid-Smith, Commissioner of the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture, and History, presented the awards to the band members.

Magnolia High School’s volleyball team along with three of the school’s football players were also honored at the Dec. 11 board meeting. The Magnolia Lady Eagles were recognized for winning the 2018 West Virginia Class-A State Volleyball Championship. Football players Pat Mirandy, Sebastian Stickler, and Mike Hamrick were recognized for being named to the 2018 West Virginia Class-A All-State Football list.
