Stocking Of Cheer Prepares For Third Year

By Staff | Nov 14, 2018

The Wetzel County Democratic Women recently came together to gather donations for the Stocking of Cheer program, which aspires to give each Wetzel County child a bit of Christmas cheer.

Wetzel County’s Stocking of Cheer program organizers are working fervently to ensure that each child in Wetzel County has a bit of Christmas cheer this year.

The program began after organizers became concerned that some children, who might not otherwise receive a Christmas gift, might “fall through the cracks” – not applying for other area charitable gift-giving programs.

Thus, “A Calm Stocking of Cheer” began in 2016, and through organizers,’ and the community’s, efforts, approximately 500 stockings were passed out to local youngsters at Wetzel County Schools.

The program has grown since then, and Calm Stocking of Cheer anticipates filling 1,500 stockings this year. Organizers hope that each child in grades K-4 will receive a stocking, while each child in grades 5-8 will hopefully receive a Christmas card, along with a gift certificate for an item at McDonalds, Wendys, etc.

“I am super excited, and every donation helps,” said Billie Zimmerman, one of the founders of the program.

Efforts began early for this year’s program. A craft/vendor show was held Nov. 3, while a quarter auction is slated for Nov. 24.

The Stocking of Cheer program also received help from the Wetzel County Democratic Women, who recently donated stocking stuffers.

Those who wish to help may reach out via the “Stocking of Cheer Program” Facebook, or make a monetary donation at Bayer Heritage Credit Union. Folks may also call 304-398-2082.
