On April 27, while in the custody of the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office, Joseph Marcum took control of a police cruiser in an attempt to escape. The two citizens who managed to detain Marcum were recognized for their heroic acts on Tuesday, Aug. 21.

On April 27, the police cruiser was parked at the Wetzel County Magistrate Office, with Marcum inside, when Deputy Donald Bordenkircher exited the cruiser briefly to speak with Chief Deputy Rob Hayes. At that point Marcum managed to slip to the front of the cruiser, where he gained control of the vehicle in an attempt to escape.

Marcum headed north on Main Street before crashing into a telephone pole. Tim Martie and Joey Dawson who were working nearby, were able to detain Marcum until deputies arrived shortly thereafter.

On Tuesday, Aug. 21, the WCSO honored the two citizens for their assistance in detaining the escaped prisoner.

“We wish to show our appreciation to Tim and Joey for their assistance. Without their presence and assistance it is uncertain what else might have occurred to any innocent bystanders that day,” commented Sheriff Mike Kootnz.

Both Martie and Dawson said they were glad to be of help and thanked the sheriff’s office for the nice recognition and plaques on their behalf.
