Town and Country Days Concludes for Year

By Staff | Aug 22, 2018

Rose Witcherman accepts the Wetzel County Committee on Aging’s Outstanding Senior Award on behalf of recipient Bill Witschey, who was unable to be present for the award.

Bill Witschey was named the Wetzel County Committee on Aging’s Outstanding Senior during Town & Country Days’ senior festivities on Thursday, Aug. 16.

Witschey’s nomination noted how the 87-year-old is one of five children born to Harold and Ethel and still continues to work seven days a week in the family grocery business started by his father in 1944.

Witschey is recognized for his patriotism as well; the United States Air Force veteran sponsors the American flag billboard along North Street, near the railroad tracks. This billboard reads “We Pledge Allegiance.” Witschey has many family members and friends who also were willing to protect the United States through various branches of the United States Military.

Witschey’s nomination also noted how he allows space for many fundraisers at his store, throughout the year. Some examples include the Salvation Army kettles during the Christmas holiday, poppy sales for veterans, Girl Scout cookies tables, collection drive for the Wetzel County Animal Shelter and more.

Witschey was also recognized for continuing to operate his store in any and all conditions – floods, extended power outages from storms, and more.

It was also noted that Mr. Witschey never forgets a face. The spotting a customer at a far end of an aisle, Mr. Witschey will recognize the shopper and offer a greeting, and he “sincerely wants to hear how they are doing.”
