New Martinsville Releases Fireworks Reminder

By Staff | Jun 20, 2018

The City of New Martinsville wishes to remind its residence of the following ordinance, which applys to the use of fireworks:

Although the State Laws have been changed legalizing a host of new and exciting “Consumer Fireworks” for your holiday celebration, the current City Ordinance still does not permit the use of fireworks within the City of New Martinsville. The reason for such ordinance is simple. SAFETY! There are a limited number of properties, of ample size, to have effective safety zones. What goes up must come down!! The fireworks need to land on your own property instead of the neighbor’s roof, car, or on City streets. There are public areas of sufficient size but fireworks or any other devices may not be detonated on any public or City owned/controlled property due to liability and City Ordinance.

Every year the New Martinsville Police Department fields numerous complaints regarding the use of fireworks. We would like to take the opportunity to remind Citizens that use of fireworks come with implied risk, responsibility and liability. Lighting that fuse is a willful act in violation of City Ordinance. The New Martinsville Police Department will be making a diligent effort to enforce the “associated” violations such as noise, littering and destruction/ damage to property.
