Democrat Denny Longwell has announced his candidacy for West Virginia state senate, Second District. Longwell is a Navy veteran and former steelworker.

Longwell is Denny Longwell is a longtime resident of Wetzel County and currently serves as County Chair for Wetzel County Democratic Executive Committee.

“I’m running because I can’t stand to sit on the sidelines and complain any longer; that isn’t doing any good. I want to be a part, an integral part, of the solution as opposed to doing nothing and being a part of the problem. I don’t like the current state-of-affairs in our State Legislature and want to afford my energy and efforts to make positive change(s).”

Longwell was born in West Virginia and became a resident of Wetzel County in 1987. He served our Country as a Hospital Corpsman (1966-1969), is a former member of Ironworkers Local 549 in Wheeling (1966-1980), a former member of Steelworkers Local Union 5760 (1980-1986 at Conalco) and former International Representative for the United Steelworkers Union (1986-2014). Longwell retired June 1, 2014.

Longwell said there are many issues that are not currently receiving the attention and priority they should. He said education, infrastructure, teachers’ pay and health insurance, elderly, workplace safety, opioid epidemic and jobs are just a few that seem to be handed a “back seat” currently and he feels they should be at the top of the priority list.

Longwell currently resides in New Martinsville with his wife, Susie, and their Shih-Tzu, Carrie. He has a daughter, step-daughter, step-son and three grandchildren, Isaac, Isabella and Imary Snider.

“I will work for all citizens of the Second District, doing the best I can to make our State better. I will need the support of everyone. No one person can change everything. But, when ordinary people come together and get involved, extraordinary things can, and will, happen. The current division in our State and our Country is destroying life as we once knew it. We must pull up by the roots this ugly division and eradicate it completely once and for all.”

Longwell’s campaign slogan is: “Fighting For A Better Future For Everyone.”
