Wetzel Board Holds Meetings
The Wetzel County Board of Education has kept active lately, holding its regular bi-weekly meetings. Between these meetings, the board of education has scheduled its annual visits to each area of the county, for Local School Improvement Council reports.
At the Sept. 18 board meeting, the board approved the annual financial statements for fiscal year 2017. Treasurer Jeff Lancaster announced that the carryover amount of funds is $4.5 million. The board also approved of the Special Levy Election Order, calling for a School Levy Election on December 15, 2017, to renew the five-year Levy currently in effect. The current levy expires on June 30, 2018. The board, including Treasurer Lancaster, have regularly stressed the importance of Wetzel County citizens’ continual support of the levy.
At the Sept. 25 board meeting, the board received annual reports of the Local School Improvement Councils of Long Drain School and Hundred High School.
Paul Huston, principal of Long Drain School, expressed pride in students’ academic growth and academic teams. He referenced student-led programs and projects that are planned. He also provided the board with suggestions on how it could help school improvement, including staffing and funding needs, and facility upgrades.
Hundred High School Principal Beth Sigley thanked the staff, students, and colleagues that helped with flood relief this past summer. She described what she is proud of at HHS, including programs, clubs, and academics.
HHS Instructor Jeremy Kelch discussed programs for Positive Behavior Support and Behavior. He also requested a 70 inch monitor for HHS commons area, which could highlight students and their achievements.
Principal Sigley also thanked the board for HHS’ new greenhouse and facility upgrades and requested an activity bus.
In other board matters, Superintendent Ed Toman announced, at the Oct. 2 meeting, that Travis McCoy, student at Hundred High School; and Teachers Brittany Mason (New Martinsville School) and Sharon Snider (Long Drain School) have been selected to be JASON Argonauts on an upcoming trip to Malaysia.

Per advisement of the Board’s legal counsel, the Superintendent recommends that the Board approve the following groups/organizations to raise funds (Monies) in the name of a particular school in Wetzel County: New Martinsville School: NMS seventh/eighth grade volleyball, NMS seventh/eighth girls’ basketball, NMS seventh/eighth grade boys basketball, NMS seventh/eighth grade girls track, NMS seventh/eighth grade boys track, NMS seventh/eighth grade wrestling, NMS fifth/eighth band, NMS Relay for Life, NMS PTO, NMS Afterschool Art program, and New Martinsville School.
Out of State Trips:
Approval of request from Michael Harwick, Jan Emch, and Holly Cain to take the science students from MHS on a field trip to Falling Waters in Mill Run, PA on Nov. Funded through student fees.
Request to Use School Facilities:
Approval of request from Carol Roberts for the Hundred-Littleton Alumni Association to use HHS for their annual banquet and meeting on Saturday, Oct. 7.
