BOE Honors FFA State Champion Land Judging/Homesite Team
The Wetzel County Board of Education honored several of its best and brightest students at a regular meeting held Aug. 7 at the board office.
The Paden City Girl Scouts opened the meeting by leading those in attendance in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Several county youth were honored for excellence at the 2017 West Virginia FFA Convention. Magnolia High School FFA’s state champion Land Judging/Homesite team was recognized by the board. Those on the team are Devann Fox, Clayton Young, Garrett Fox, and Jarod Durig. Devann Fox was also recognized for receiving First Place Proficiency Award (Specialty Animal Production) and Second Place (Homesite Individual). She was also a winner of a $500 William R. Woodruff FFA Foundation scholarship. Fox was also elected to serve as the 2017-2018 NW Region State Officer.
Clayton Young, Matthew Lemasters, and Joey Sidenstricker were applauded for being State Degree recipients.
MHS FFA member Dessie Kernan was recognized for receiving Third Place in Underclassmen Creed.
Several Hundred FFA members were honored for receiving their State Degrees. Those members are: Hailey Eastham, Annie Fox, Miranda Gray, Sydney Hoyle, Charles Matthews, and Valerie Soles.
Annie Fox, of Hundred FFA, was recognized for receiving First Place Proficiency (Vegetable Production) and First Place Prepared Public Speaking. Annie Fox will compete at the national competition in October.
She also was a recipient of a $500 William R. Woodruff FFA Foundation scholarship, and a $2,000 John Deer Dealer/Middletown Truck Sales National FFA scholarship.
Several Pine Grove FFA members also received their State Degrees. Those members are: Alex Bassett, Cole Bates, Shannon Brown, Brooklynn McCaslin, Marisa Shannon, and Maggie Ueltschy. Maggie Hornbeck was recognized for receiving her American Degree.
Also recognized at the meeting were Short Line School Teacher Leslie Lively, along with Aubrey Neff and Haley Feldmeier. The trio recently returned from the JASON Learning Argonaut trip to the Amazon rainforest. The tree were selected for the honor last spring.
Lively, Feldmeier, and Neff spoke about their trip, citing experiences with visiting Monkey Island, fishing for pirahna, and being above the rainforest. Lively said the trio put “a lot of miles on our bodies, but we want to thank you guys for the experience.”
“It was amazing,” Lively said.
Lively noted that Feldmeier and Neff “grew up in front of me,” through the experience.
Board President Warren Grace said he could not think of three better individuals for the experience.

Request to Use School Facilities:

SRO Agreements: Approval of agreement between the City of New Martinsville and the Wetzel County Board of Education to continue to support the School Resource Officer Program (SRO Program) at Magnolia High School and New Martinsville School.
Approval of agreement between the Wetzel County Commission, the Sheriff of Wetzel County, and the Wetzel County Board of Education to continue to support the School Resource Officer Program (SRO Program) at Hundred High School/Long Drain Elementary and Paden City High School/Paden City Elementary.
Authorization for the Superintendent for Fill Vacancies: Approval for the Superintendent to fill any vacancies which shall occur prior to the first Regular Board meeting in September. Such employments shall be subject to approval of the Board.
