The local law enforcement community is suffering the loss of New Martinsville Police Department’s K-9 Rzr, who passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 16.

New Martinsville Police Department’s Detective Donnie Harris announced the news, stating he “lost a great dog and partner.”

“He was in a tragic accident at home. He was rushed to vet; however, he had to be put to sleep.”

Harris said K-9 Rzr was raised as a pup to be a police dog, and was hand-picked to be “good with kids and loved seeing children while doing his job.”

“He will be sadly missed,” Harris said.

Harris thanked the staff at NMPD for its help in the emergency, as well as Dr. Shaun Meckley of Mountain Valley Veterinary Clinic.

Harris said he was glad his family was present “to help me in this time of sorrow.”

Chief Tim Cecil also expressed his sadness regarding the loss of RZr.

“He will be sadly missed,” Chief Cecil said.

“He was not only a K-9 dog, but he was our friend.”
