New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department Chief said a fire that occurred yesterday morning, on James Street, appears to be accidental. However, the matter is still under investigation.

New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department Chief Rick Myers has released a statement concerning a Monday, Feb. 27 house fire that occurred at 404 James Street in Steelton.

The NMVFD was alerted to the fire at 9:06 a.m. Monday. Myers said “Upon arrival units observed heavy fire and smoke coming from the picture window in the front of the structure.”

Myers said the first engine’s crew made an interior attack “immediately knocking down the fire and began a primary search of the structure as it was unclear whether there was anyone home a the time of the fire.”

Second arriving units were tasked with a secondary search and ventilation to rid the structure of excessive smoke and heat, “so that a more thorough inspection could be made.”

Myers reported that the fire was contained to the living room area, and the cause of the fire appears to be accidental, but is still under investigation.

Myers said units stayed on scene for a short while to clean up and secure the home, and one occupant of the residence was transported to Wetzel County Hospital as a precaution.

Along with Wetzel County EMS, the NMVFD was assisted by units from Paden City Volunteer Fire Company.
