Though students and teachers might have had a recent summer vacation from school, Wetzel County Schools’ maintenance crews have been busy yearlong making upgrades to the schools’ facilities. At the Tuesday, Sept. 6 meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education, Brian Jones, Director of Facilities, Maintenance, and Transportation, provided the board with an update regarding the various improvements to the school system’s facilities.

Jones explained how all of the high schools now have access control panels and key pads for entry. Employees use a fob to enter the school. Jones explained that if an individual does not have the fob, he or she will have to be “buzzed” into the school. Jones said that the school system is trying to eliminate doors with handles so that there will be a more secure entry into the schools.

Jones also showed the board various photos of some of the school’s larger improvements. For instance, Paden City Elementary School has relocated its office to the front of the school. “It’s taken a few years, but we have relocated that office complex to the front of the building. As soon as you come in the building, right to your left is that office,” Jones explained.

Hundred High School also had new windows installed in its gymnasium, while Shortline School had its dumpster relocated so that kids would not have to walk by it to get to the school’s playground.

Long Drain School’s students also saw improvements to their playground, thanks to the board, and Valley High School saw a new coat of paint in its gymnasium.

There are still ongoing projects at Wetzel County Schools, such as Magnolia FFA’s meat lab and Shortline School’s music room. Jones noted that the latter mentioned project would be ready in four to five weeks. The meat lab will take longer due to foundation work that was needed.

“This is an educational device you have all invested in,”Jones explained. “We had Buster at the Paden City Labor Day parade. All it takes is a request from the building principal, and we will bring Buster out to the school for training.”
