A Wetzel County man is behind bars after allegedly threatening New Martinsville Police officers.

Leslie Wayne Riel, 68, first had a run-in with law enforcement on Saturday when he allegedly tried to break through the mandatory evacuation blockade police had set up due to the Axiall chlorine leak.

Riel had reportedly fled from officers in a vehicle and hid in the Northgate area of New Martinsville.

Among other charges, Riel was charged with disorderly conduct and sentenced to 24 hours in jail.

Upon being released from jail, Riel allegedly told the officer releasing him that he was going to get a gun, and shoot and kill Sergeant Don Larsen of NMPD. Riel also allegedly threatened to ram his vehicle into NMPD’s cruisers.

NMPD officers, upon finding out about the threat, retrieved a warrant and with a Special Response Team (SRT), arrested Riel and put him in jail for retaliation against an officer.

Riel is behind bars on a $25,000 bond.

Chief Tim Cecil, of NMPD, stated of the situation: “We aren’t going to put up with idle threats to our officers. Our lives matter too.”
