Extension Service Unveils Calendar

By Staff | Dec 23, 2015

A new year is just about here, and Mollie Toppe, Wetzel County’s WVU Extension Agent, is especially excited to turn the pages of the WVU Extension Service’s 2016 garden calendar.

Featuring a “Farm-to-Table” concept, the calendar, available statewide on Dec. 11, includes educational articles, pest management tips and a vegetable variety guide specific to that month of the growing season. The resources are provided by WVU Extension’s agriculture and natural resource faculty members.

“This year’s garden calendars are beautiful,” Toppe stated. “If people are familiar with the calendars they will find everything they have always enjoyed, such as when to plant, but this year the calendar has some new features,” she added.

Toppe said the calendars are printed in full color and include monthly articles about seasonal fruits and vegetables. This year’s calendars also include suggested vegetable variety charts, pest management tips, and seasonal recipes based on the monthly featured vegetable. The recipes are provided by WVU Extension Service’s Family Nutrition specialists and focus on simple, accessible produce.

“The recipes will be a tasty resource when shopping at the Wetzel County Farmer’s Market!” Toppe notes.

Each month of the Garden Calendar features a seasonal fruit or vegetable.

The calendars are available while supplies last. They are free and can be picked up at the Extension Office, located at 2213 Mountaineer Highway, inside the Wetzel County Center for Children and Families. Toppe also plans on distributing the calendars to local libraries, feed stores, and businesses.

Those who wish to request calendars for their organization can call the office at 304-455-0934.

Also, gardening and healthy recipe advice is available year-round through programs, resources, and fact sheets offered by the WVU Extension Service. To learn about programming in Wetzel County, call the office at the above-mentioned number.
