Mules To Be Featured In National Calendar
Paul and Jane Fuchs were recently surprised to find out their mules, Doc and Bugs, have been featured in a national publication. The duo will be February’s models for the 2016 Mule Calendar.
Mischka Press, which publishes Rural Heritage magazine, releases several calendars a year, one of which is the Mule Wall Calendar. Doc and Bugs participated in a parade during the 2014 Mule Days in Columbia, Tenn. There, the mules’ photo was taken by Bob Mischka of Mischka Press. The photo was since chosen by Bob and his son, Joe Mischka, for the 2016 Mule Calendar.
Paul stated that his wife and himself did not realize Mischka Press was considering Doc and Bugs for the calendar.
“Three to four months after we returned home from Tennessee, Mischka Press called and and wondered if they could use the mules for the calendar,” Paul explained.
Their Tennessee trip was not at all the first time Doc and Bugs have been outside state lines. Paul explained that Jane and himself have covered many miles with their mule team.
“We’ve covered about 1400 miles out West following the Mormon Trail for three years,” he noted.
Despite being a team, Doc and Bugs each possess a different personality. Paul said Bugs enjoys having his ears scratched, and Doc is Paul’s best trail mule.
“They each have their own special little thing that one does better than the other,” Paul explained.
“They are a beautiful pair of mules,” Bob Mischka explained as to why he decided to photograph Doc and Bugs.
Mischka Press has published calendars for the past 20 years. They currently publish four calendars: Draft Horse Calendar, Mule Calendar, Driving Horse Calendar, and Donkey Calendar.
According to their site at www.mischka.com, Mischka now stocks and sells over 150 items of interest to draft horse, driving horse, and mule customers. Items include books, videos, calendars, posters, postcards, notepaper, and Christmas cards. Mischka’s site states that they have become the largest publisher and reseller of these specialized items in the world.
