Board of Education Approves Matter

The following personnel and routine matters were approved at the Monday, Nov. 16 meeting of the Wetzel County Board of Education. Linda Kirk voted “no” in regards to personnel matters. Also, routine matters did not receive a second motion and thus failed to pass. However, after an executive session was held at the end of the meeting, the board returned to open session and routine matters was passed. Prior to passing routine matters, Board Member Carolyn Gatian expressed concern about an adequate number of chaperones on the band trip. It was also noted that only two students are attending the band trip.

Personnel Matters:

Sheldon R. Ruckman, acceptance of retirement from position as science teacher at Paden City High School, effective Jan. 29, 2016.

Resignations:

Lisa K. Toman, acceptance of resignation from position as third grade teacher at New Martinsville School, effective Dec. 31.

Professional Personnel:

Alexis J. Emch, approval for employment as countywide substitute teacher, effective Nov. 17.

Christy L. Glover, approval for employment as countywide substitute school nurse, effective Nov. 17.

Melissa F. Hayes, approval for change in assignment from half-time music teacher at Paden City Elementary and half-time countywide substitute teacher, to general music teacher/choral director at Long Drain School and Hundred High School, effective Dec. 9.

Service Personnel:

John R. Cain, approval for change in assignment from evening custodian III at NMS, 683/C, 228-day contract, to evening custodian III at PCES, 683/C, 228-day contract, effective Nov. 17.

Extracurricular:

Kathi D. Schmalz, approval for contracted services position as mentor principal – Valley High School, effective Nov. 17.

Leave of Absence:

Approval of request from Mary J. Kovalcik for an unpaid ‘medical leave of absence’ from her position as English/Language Arts teacher at NMS beginning Nov. 9 through Jan. 14, 2016.

Approval of request from Shayla M. Brown for an unpaid ‘maternity leave of

absence’ from her position as kindergarten teacher at PCES beginning upon depletion of her personal leave and permissive personal leave days, from Jan. 15, 2016 through April 15, 2016.

Routine Matters:

Out of State Trips:

Approval of request from Donald Taylor, band director, to take students from the VHS band to perform with the Virginia Tech Honor Band in Virginia, on Jan. 22-24. Funded through student fees.

Approval of the following Chaperones/Volunteers for the 2015-2016

School Year:

New Martinsville School: Candace Johnson

Short Line School: Cory Ice, Mandy Ice, Jennifer Barker, Bill Barker, Kenny Ice, and Charlene Ice.

Approval of first reading of Wetzel County Policy IKA, Assessment/Report Systems.
