Velinda Phillips was named the 2015 Wetzel County Senior of the Year at this year’s “Senior Citizens Day” at Town and Country Days.

Phillips’ nomination described her as “a good neighbor and friend” to so many people.

Phillips continues to volunteer at the local nursing home by helping with Christmas parties and picnics. She will visit and read to patients. If someone is sick or in need of help, Phillips is always there, no matter if she is busy or doesn’t quite feel up to it, she always makes the time to help.

Phillips’ nomination describes her as “always dependable.” Even through rough times, Phillips seems to always make time to help others.

Phillips taught school at Hundred High School for one and a half years, was home demonstration agent for four years, and retired from teaching at Magnolia High School after 30 years.

Phillips has been married to Ralph Phillips for 50 years. They have two sons: Jon of Charleston and Allen of New Martinsville. They have five grandchildren.
