Summer Community Picnic Set for Saturday
The second Kick Off To Summer Community Picnic will be held this Saturday, June 13 at the Wetzel County 4-H grounds. The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and is sponsored by the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Department and the Wetzel County Coalition Against Drug Abuse.
The event is for all students in Wetzel County, Pre-kindergarten through 8th grade, along with their families.
The event will include Air Evac Lifeteam Demonstrations, food, WETZ live remote, Boy Scouts, prizes, Wetzel County Hospital blood pressure clinic, New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department, Sno-Cones, Domino’s, Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office, K-9/Cruiser demonstration, BallonOvations, 911 Center, Inflatables, Valley High School’s Outdoor Club, free certified carseat checks, and more.
The picnic came to fruition last year, after Wetzel County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Mike Koontz, along with Deputy Randy Adams, approached Brandi Murray, of the Wetzel County Coalition Against Drug Abuse, with the idea. Koontz previously said to the Chronicle that he wanted to do something to connect with the community, children specifically.
“Police officers are not bad. We’re not the enemy. We’re approachable,” he had said.
Murray agrees, adding that research shows that events, such as the picnic, support protective factors that help prevent the likelihood of substance abuse.
