One Dead In UTV Accident
GLEN EASTON – A utility terrain vehicle accident left one man dead and a woman seriously injured early Sunday in Marshall County.
The driver, Dillon Jackson, 23, of New Martinsville, died at the scene, according to Sheriff Kevin Cecil. A passenger, 24-year-old Courtney Raber, also of New Martinsville, was taken to an area hospital with back and hip fractures, according to Sheriff Kevin Cecil.
The accident occurred at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday in the Lynn Camp area of Fish Creek, along a dirt path about a mile away from the main road. Cecil said Jackson apparently lost control of the UTV, and both he and Raber were ejected as the vehicle rolled about 200 feet down a hill.
The accident remains under investigation.
Jackson was a graduate of Magnolia High School where he played football. He was a heavy equipment operator with Operating Engineers Union Local 132.
Friends will be received at the Jarvis Williams Funeral Home in New Martinsville from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
“Speed was involved, but we’re looking into other factors, as well,” Cecil said.
Sunday’s fatal accident comes a week after Marshall County deputies responded numerous UTV- and ATV-related incidents over the Memorial Day weekend. It’s a recurring problem for law enforcement, but Cecil said operating the vehicles safely boils down to common sense: Use caution, watch the speed and never operate an ATV or UTV under the influence of alcohol.
“You need to be aware, because things can happen in the blink of an eye,” he said.
