Wetzel BOE Approves Calendar

By Staff | Apr 29, 2015

The Wetzel County Board of Education approved the 2015-16 school calendar at their April 21 regular meeting, choosing to give Wetzel County School students a three-day spring break instead of six days off.

Interim Superintendent Jay Yeager said there were two options for the 2015-16 school year based on counties that attend the Mid-Ohio Valley Technical Institute. They include Pleasants, Ritchie and Tyler counties.

Yeager said Wetzel County’s high schools seemed to favor the six-day break option, whereas grade schools favored the three-day option. Yeager said the only recommendation was that if the board go with a six-day spring break calendar, that they guarantee the six days, meaning that spring break could not be used to make up snow days. Yeager noted that he knew the board had warned parents and teachers previously not to plan trips during spring break, but they still did regardless. “We were short of substitutes,” he noted of the 2015 spring break.

“If you take the three-day spring break, the kids who go to the tech center would have no school those other three days?” Board Member Linda Kirk questioned.

“That is correct,” Yeager noted, adding the kids could make up the three days some other time.

“So are the other schools guaranteeing the six days?” Board President Mike Blair inquired.

“They are guaranteeing it,” Yeager agreed.

Board members Carolyn Gatian and Joshua Balcerek said they favored the three-day break option. The board unanimously approved the school calendar that included three days off for spring break.

The first day for the instructional term is Aug. 17, with the last day instructional term being May 19.

Also at the April 21 board meeting, the board discussed which board members would attend the county’s graduations. All board members chose to attend all of the graduations, except Kirk opted out of attending Magnolia High School’s graduation, which is the same day as Valley High School’s graduation. Kirk will be accepting VHS graduates at their graduation on May 24, 5 p.m. Board Member Gatian will accept Paden City High School graduates at 7:30 p.m. May 23. Board President Blair will accept Hundred High School’s Class of 2015 at 7 p.m. May 22, and Balcerek will accept MHS’s Class of 2015 at 2 p.m. May 24.
