NMPD Recovers Stolen Truck
According to the New Martinsville Police Department, Joseph Allen Murphy, 29, of Tyler County, was arrested April 11 for grand theft auto and a capias warrant out of Tyler County.
The NMPD reports that on April 11 while on routine patrol, Patrolman Jason Utt noticed two occupants in a vehicle not wearing seat belts. Utt was preparing to make a traffic stop when the vehicle pulled into the 7-11 parking lot. Both occupants exited the vehicle and waited at the 7-11. A red truck pulled onto the lot and picked up both individuals. Patrolman Utt then followed the vehicle and called NMPD Police Chief Tim Cecil. Utt radioed the license plate of the vehicle the subjects had gotten out of and Cecil, hearing the plate number, remembered this to be a stolen vehicle from Tyler County. The license check verified that the vehicle was stolen.
Patrolman Utt initiated the traffic stop with back up from Cecil and State Trooper Patrick Cullinan and State Trooper Jared Newman. The three individuals were detained and questioned by Patrolman Michael Owens. One of the subjects, Murphy, was arrested
The other two were questioned and released.
NMPD credits Utt, Owens, and West Virginia State Police for their backup. They also thank NMPD Dispatcher Miranda Billiter and Tyler County Dispatch for their assistance as well.
