Commission Donates To Pool Fund

By Staff | Jan 28, 2015

It was announced at the Jan. 21 meeting of the New Martinsville Parks and Recreation Department that the Wetzel County Commission has given the department an approximate $125,000 donation to help with the upgrades the Lewis-Wetzel Pool needs to open this summer.

At the Dec. 2 meeting of the Wetzel County Commission, NM Parks and Recreation Director Bev Gibb made the request for monetary assistance, stating that the upgrade would cost roughly $350,000. Gibb stated that the pool’s skimmer system “is shot” and the parks and recreation commission wanted to make sure the public had a safe, enjoyable place to swim. She stated the committee wanted to have a new gutter system installed around the top of the pool to get rid of the skimmer, as well as a new filter and chlorination system.

Gibb had requested that the commission give the department $40,000 each year for the next five years. The commission was not sure if they could grant that specific request, as it would be putting the next commission in debt.

Commission President Bob Gorby stated that the funds the commission had given were for the Lewis-Wetzel Pool. “They have to redo it, or they can’t open in the spring,” he noted. “They don’t have the money to do it all.”
