Problem Causes Train To Block State Route 2

By Staff | Jan 14, 2015

Those driving through New Martinsville Sunday afternoon might have experienced some travel woes that stemmed from a mechanical issue with a CSX train. This issue caused CSX’s Route 2 crossing to be blocked for approximately an hour.

Kaitlyn Barrett, CSX Corporate Communications, stated that a CSX train traveling from Russell, Ky., to Cumberland, Md., “departed the Brooklyn Yard in New Martinsville before experiencing a mechanical malfunction that caused the train to stop, blocking the Vine St. crossing for about an hour on Sunday afternoon. The conductor followed CSX’s safety protocol by walking the full length of the train to ensure it was safe before resuming operations.”

Barrett added that safety is “a core value” at CSX and is “the foundation for every operational decision we make.”

“We understand the frustrations of New Martinsville (area) residents when trains disrupt traffic flow, and we appreciate their patience as we work to move every train from the Brooklyn Yard safely as quickly as possible,” she noted.
