Caleb Singer, student at Hundred High School, was recognized at the Wetzel County Board of Education meeting Dec. 15 for the “Yes I Can Award.”

Superintendent Dennis Albright noted that the award is presented by the Council for Exceptional Children. Singer was nominated by teacher Bonnie McGlumphy.

Singer stated he has worked hard perfecting his photography skills and using the creative aid of his brain to do things and build things. “I have taken thousands of photos and edited them just for my pleasure because I never thought I could do anything with them,” Singer noted, adding that he then showed McGlumphy who “went crazy.”

McGlumphy is very interested in what he does. “I have shown her how to edit pictures and get the quality of work that people expect. I even did some senior pictures for some kids. I am still working on them, but it is great. The adults I have shown have been really impressed with me at my age.”

Singer did some work in his technology ready classes with Denise Huggins. “She was so happy with the stuff I made that she wanted to put me in an art show. I did it. People were so happy with what I did they were wanting to buy it. I’m so happy.”

Caleb Singer took this photo while visiting the Navajo Nation Reservation in Utah.

“As his principal, I am very proud of many of Caleb’s accomplishments,” Hundred High School Principal Daniel Gottron noted. “He has served his classmates as our student body president and is an extremely talented person. He has an exceptional ability to take and edit photos, and this award is well deserved.”

“We are fortunate to have Caleb as one of our students,” Gottron added, “and he has a very bright future ahead of him.”

In a statement for the Chronicle, Singer noted that it was an honor to be selected to win the “Yes I Can” award in the category of Art. “I started taking pictures in the seventh grade and the hobby has grown into something I am very passionate about,” Singer added. “I learned many of my photography skills from my uncle. Recently, I was invited to travel out west with my aunt and uncle, which became a great opportunity to embrace my passion for photography.”

Deborah Novotny, instructional director/manager, stated that Wetzel County Schools is “extremely proud of Caleb and all the progress he has made throughout the years.”

“This award is the combination of a lot of hard work on Caleb’s part, and we commend his family and his teachers at Hundred High School for helping him to fulfill his dreams,” Novotny stated. “We look forward to hearing about Caleb’s success and the full transition to the next phase of his life, which I believe he’d like to attend culinary school.”

“He was extremely successful with his photography, his interest in his photography, but we are just very, very proud of all the progress he has made since he has entered in Wetzel County Schools,” Novotny stated.

“He has just made tremendous growth, and he is a very hard working student, and he has just achieved a lot of success through a lot of hard work and support of his family.”
