Heroes Day to honor all
The City of Sistersville will be the place to be on Sept. 7 as Heroes from every walk of life will be honored and recognized for their service to their community, state, and nation.
The brain child of Rev. Bill Dawson of Sistersville, Heroes Day was created in 2011 to recognize the tenth anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001.
As well as honoring those first responders and veterans lost during the tragedy on that day, “Heroes Day” seeks to recognize the contributions made by those who currently serve as soldiers, firefighters, law enforcement officers, and EMS workers.
The 2014 event in Sistersville will begin at 10 a.m. with an Ecumenical Worship Service at First United Methodist Church.
At 11:30 a.m. there will be a covered dish dinner in honor of all first responders and veterans is scheduled.
At 1 p.m., a parade of first responders and veterans will line up on Riverside Drive, and at 2 p.m. the Heroes Day Parade will travel down Wells Street.
Following the parade, Safety Day events will be held at the Sistersville City Park and everyone is encouraged to attend.
The Sistersville Volunteer Fire Department will set up a landing zone for Air Evac. Visitors will be able to tour the helicopter and ask questions.
They will also be able to view fire trucks, ambulances, police cars, and see the equipment used in each profession up close. Other activities include: fingerprinting of children, a K-9 demonstration, a drug awareness seminar by the W.Va. State Police, Smoky Bear, and a goggle simulation of alcohol impairment. There will also be information for Veteran Services.
Dawson hopes that this day of recognition is something that grows throughout the state and nation.
