Hundred Plans For July 4

By Staff | Jun 25, 2014

Plans for the Fourth of July celebration were the main topic of discuss at the June 16 meeting of Hundred Town Council.

Recorder Sherry Hayes said the event, to be held on the actual Fourth of July, a Friday, will start with a parade at 4 p.m. This is a slight change from last year, beginning an hour earlier.

The parade from Hundred High School to Cosgray Field will be followed by the Little Miss and Mr. Liberty Pageant with little contests similar to Minute To Win It between the pageant’s age group events.

New this year will be Cow Patty Bingo, which will benefit Young Life. Hayes explained that a portable corral will be set up by the visitor bleachers. The area will be marked off into squares and people can take chances on a square. The person who holds the ticket for the square where a patty is put down will win half of the proceeds. Tickets can be purchased from area businesses and Young Life organizers.

While plans are still being finalized, Hayes said they will possibly have pony rides and a line dance show. Of course there will be Virgil’s Games, cornhole, Cinch, and horseshoe tournaments.

Hundred Miles from Nowhere will play music until fireworks time.

“I’m hoping to stress for people to stay in the park for the fireworks,” said Hayes. “It would be wonderful if people would bring blankets and lawn chairs. I think it would just be so awesome to see everybody stay together and watch them as a community and hear all the oohs and aahs.”

“One of the best places to see the fireworks is in the park,” added Councilwoman Donna Himelrick.

Of course there will also be food and more at the field as well. Mark Poe will hold a chicken roast. Usually area churches and non-profit groups have something. Contact Hayes at the city building, 304-775-5131, if you want to have a concession or games. Anyone who wants to be in the parade should be at the high school between 3-3:30 p.m.; lineup at 3:40 p.m. The rain day for the event is July 6.
