MHS Names Top Four Students

Joanna Graham Valedictorian
Four top students led Magnolia’s graduation ceremony Sunday at Alumni Field.
The Class of 2014’s had three valedictorians: Joanna Graham, Shelby Sands, and Cole Seckman. Logan Massey was the salutatorian.
Graham is the daughter of Wyatt and Melinda Graham and the granddaughter of Fauniel Graham and the late Bill Graham and Inez Buck and the late Dale Buck. Joanna served two years as Class President and two years in Student Council. She is president of Mu Alpha Theta, president of the Technology Student Association, co-president of the National Honor Society, vice-president of the Art National Honor Society, co-leader of IMPACT, four-year Service Club member with over 340 volunteer hours, Young Ladies Union, and Drug Free Clubs of America member. Joanna played volleyball two years and ran track her senior year. She attended the Governor’s School for Math and Science, the Governor’s Honors Academy, and the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Forum.
She received many awards including: Wetzel County Math Field Day winner (three years), the President’s Volunteer Service Award, Chesapeake Energy Challenge Community Service Award, the OVAC All-Conference Academic Award, John Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Award, and more. She has received the EQT Student of Excellence Scholarship; The Elks Most Valuable Student Scholarship; The WVU Presidential Scholarship; The Promise Scholarship; The Benjamin E. Statler Engineering Scholarship; the West Virginia Higher Education Grant; the West Virginia Engineering, Science and Technology Scholarship; the Jim Quinet Memorial Scholarship; the Murray and Barbara Gross Family Foundation Scholarship; the Chesapeake Energy Challenge Program Scholarships for Academic Excellence/Community Service/ STEM; and the Mu Alpha Theta Scholarship. Joanna was recently nominated as Youth Leader of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce. She has also worked part-time at La Pasta Bella Restaurant for two-and-a-half years and is a certified Piloxing instructor. She is an active member of the First Baptist Church of Belmont. Joanna plans to attend West Virginia University in the fall and study Civil Engineering.
Sands is the daughter of Terry and Donna Sands of New Martinsville. She is treasurer of the Senior Class, president of the Student Council, and recorder of the Magnolia’s Chapter of the Technology Student Association. During her high school years Shelby has been a member of the color guard, concert band, cross country, and track team. She has participated in the National Science Honor Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Drug Free Clubs of America. She also has served as a member on the Youth Advisory Committee of the Wetzel County Coalition Against Drug Abuse. In the fall, Shelby will attend West Liberty University as an honor student and major in Elementary Education. She received several scholarships, including the Pat Bland Memorial Scholarship.

Shelby Sands Valedictorian
Seckman is the son of Chad and Elizabeth Seckman and grandson of Allen and Nancy Seckman of Alma and Caroline and the late Kenneth Hartman of Middlebourne. He is a member of the New Martinsville United Methodist Church. Cole was a three-year letterman for Magnolia football, achieving the rank of first team All-State and winning the offensive line Block of Granite award. He was also first team All-OVAC and first team All-Valley. Cole was also active in TSA (Technology Students Association) as the club’s treasurer, and winning at the state level and going to the national competition three years in a row. Cole is a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta math honor society, the Science National Honor Society, a Hoby Ambassador, a frequent winner at Math Field Day, a Letters about Literature winner, and a member of student council. Cole will be attending West Virginia University on scholarship as a Biology major. His future goal is to become a pediatric dentist.
Massey is the son of Jeff and Renee Massey and grandson of Jerry and Karen Mason of Reader and John and Donna Massey of Abingdon, Va. Logan is a member of the National Honor Society, the Science National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honorary, and attended the HOBY Youth Leadership Seminar. He has also participated in TSA for four years, including serving as vice-president his senior year. He was November’s Rotary Student of the Month and is a member of the Service Club and the Drug Free Clubs of America. An Academic Letterman, Logan has maintained a GPA above 4.0 by challenging himself with many Advanced Placement and college classes. Additionally, he participated in Letters About Literature, the annual Math Field Day, and is a member of the Society of High School Scholars.
Logan was a member of the basketball, track, and golf teams, receiving letters in all three. He was named to the OVAC All-Academic Team. He is a member of the First Baptist Church of Paden City where he is involved in the worship band. Logan is the recipient of the Promise Scholarship, Belmont G. Berry Scholarship, Tad Fitzsimmons Scholarship, and the Bayer Employee Federal Credit Union Scholarship. He has been accepted to WVU where he plans to study Management Information Systems in the fall.
