A proclamation marking the week of May 18-24 as Community Education Outreach Service Week was adopted and signed by the Wetzel County Commission at their May 6 meeting.

As the West Virginia CEOS organization celebrates its 100th year, it continues a strong tradition of education, service, and community development dating back to 1914 when the first club was formed in Ohio County. Known through the years as farm women’s clubs and homemakers’ clubs, local CEOS clubs are supported by the West Virginia University Extension Service which develops program topics on timely issues including preserving the environment, building family strengths, and increasing awareness of our global interdependence.

Representatives of the Burton CEOS, Barbara Brasher and Cathy Eastham, spoke to the commissioners about the club’s projects. The Burton club started almost 80 years ago and is now the only active club left in Wetzel County. Since building the park was one of the first goals of the original club in the 1930s, Burton CEOS continues to provide improvements and maintenance for the park. Members also volunteer many hours each year to other community services such as churches, the public library, and schools. A new state CEOS project provides reusable filters for clean water to communities in central Africa.

To continue its mission to strengthen individuals and families through continuing education, leadership development, and community involvement, present and past CEOS members will celebrate the 100th anniversary during the third week of May.
