Ham And Bacon Show Sets New Record
The 46th annual Wetzel County 4-H/FFA Ham and Bacon Show held Friday attained a new record, raising $64,100.25.
The well-attended event at the Wetzel County 4-H Grounds Mollohan Center featured ham, bacon, and eggs as raised by Wetzel County students.
The grand champion ham was exhibited by Maggie Hornbeck. Weighing 23.5 pounds, it sold to Union Bank of Hundred and New Martinsville for $100 per pound, or $2,350. The grand champion bacon exhibited by Lathe Ueltschy sold to Wetzel County Assessor Scott Lemley for $500 per pound, or $3,250 for the 6.5 pound item. The grand champion dozen eggs sold for $1,100 to TransEnergy. They were exhibited by Casandra Henderson.
The reserve champion ham was raised and prepared by Joey Sidenstricker. The 21.75-pound entry was sold for $75 per pound, or $1,631, to A & A Supply. DAC, Drilling Appalachian Corporation, purchased the reserve champion bacon from J.D. Morris for $2,567.50, or $395 per pound for 6.5 pounds. The reserve champion eggs were shown by Melanie Thomas and purchased by ThistleDew Farm for $400.
The show also includes three items sold specifically to help endow the Paul Henderson Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship ham, donated by the Pine Grove FFA, was sold to the Wileyville Volunteer Fire Department for $2,500. The WVFD purchases the scholarship ham every year and uses it in their chicken and ham dinner fund raiser, to be held this year April 5. The scholarship bacon, donated by the Hundred FFA, was sold to Howard Henderson for $1,050. The special FFA Carhartt jacket sent for $600 to DeNoon Lumber.
This year’s scholarship winners were recognized. They are Rocky Tennnat and Ethan Umstead of Hundred, Mary Bassett of Porters Falls, and Ryder Scyoc of Pine Grove. Each will receive a $500 scholarship after successfully completing their first semester of college.
