A community meeting to discuss a way to resolve the problem of CSX trains blocking on state Route 2 in New Martinsville and other crossings in the town will be held Thursday, 4 p.m., at the Lighthouse Community Church.

Frances Headley and Patsy Hoyt appeared before New Martinsville City Council Monday night to make them aware of the meeting, asking members to attend.

In fact, Headley said outside of the meeting, “We have confirmation from the various community officials that they will be in attendance including New Martinsville City Council, City Recorder, Chief of Police, County Prosecutor, County Commission, and other elected and appointed officials.

“Confirmation has also been received from organizations involved with first responders such as Air Evac, Wetzel County EMS, and the New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department.”

Hoyt said she decided it was time to get “something started” when she and her husband had to wait in a long line for an hour on Feb. 23. She said she called the railroad yard to inquire about the wait and said she was treated very rudely. While Hoyt does not live in New Martinsville, she said, “We’re all in this together.”

Residents of the portion of the Brooklyn section of New Martinsville between the railroad and river have been particularly inconvenienced by railroad traffic since the Brooklyn Bridge on Main Street has been closed, The closure is because the bridge’s piers have been deemed unsafe.

The Lighthouse Community Church (formerly St. John’s Methodist Church) is located at 249 South Maple Avenue.
