Two escaped convicts were caught Monday in New Martinsville after not returning to the Charleston Work Release Center on Friday.

New Martinsville Police Chief Tim Cecil stated that Kevin D. Leek, 44, was found in the woods above Fourth and Fifth Streets in New Martinsville, toward the Ohio River Bridge.

Brenda G. Williams, 37, was found on the northern end of the bike path, by the New Martinsville Airport, hiding by the river.

Cecil stated that the police force had received a tip from the owner of the Plaza Inn, who had reported he had “a couple of people up there walking around suspiciously.” Cecil adds that once the NMPD arrived at the inn, Captain Steve Kastigar of the NMPD realized the individuals were the two fugitives.

Cecil also credited the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department for helping with the capture, stating they had remained on alert at the Ohio entrance to the bridge and had sent over one of their police dogs to help with the search.

The West Virginia State Police had also helped with the search, as well as Sistersville Police Department member Rob Haught, who was familiar with both convicts, as they had ties to the Sistersville area.

According to the Charleston Work Release Center’s website, Leek’s next parole hearing was scheduled for June 1, whereas Williams’ hearing was scheduled for Sept. 1.

The center’s website states that inmates assigned to the facility “must be within 18 months of parole eligibility or discharge.”

Leek has been serving at Mount Olive Correctional Center for two counts of grand larceny committed in Marshall County as well as two counts of second offense petit larceny and two counts of breaking and entering in Tyler County.

Williams had been serving at Lakin Correctional Center for one count of forgery credit card out of Fayette County; one count of forgery credit card out of Mercer County; one count of grand larceny and one count of fraud with access device, each out of Raleigh County.
