ArtsLink is pleased to present an exhibit by local artist, Brenda Dorsey, on Nov. 3 from 2-4 p.m. This free event will be held at the Francis Creative Art Center at the corner of Maple Avenue and Washington Street in downtown New Martinsville. Light refreshments will be served.

Dorsey comments, “If ‘artist’ is defined as one who creates images for monetary reward, then I am not that; neither am I one who creates art as a hobby for a way to pass time. In fact, because there are so many ways to be an artist, I don’t really call myself that. I do watercolors and pencil drawings, but art is not and never has been my profession. It has not even always been a hobby. I do my paintings because I enjoy the process, and I like the challenge of learning a new medium. I have been doing watercolors seriously for about a year, and before that I did mostly pencil and ink drawings.”

Dorsey continues, “I am self-taught for the most part. I have always liked to draw, and as a child growing up on a farm in Spencer, W.Va, I liked to draw horses, and later horses were replaced by portraits of the Beatles and Bob Dylan I have a bachelor of fine arts degree in communication arts and design, and a master’s degree in liberal arts. My one saving arts class was a life drawing class, taught by an instructor who told me to keep my style and not be worried about what the rest of the design school deemed to be in vogue. I have remembered his kind advice, and now I draw for me. But there were years in my life when I did not draw or try to produce art of any kind.”
