Officials Break Ground For Veterans Memorial

By Staff | Aug 21, 2013

Local representatives stand alongside Matt Bland, to break the ground for the Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor.

The groundbreaking for Wetzel County’s Veterans Memorial Wall of Honor, being constructed by American Legion Marne Post #28, was held Saturday, at the south end of the American Legion Post #28 building. Wetzel County Commissioners, Delegate Dave Pethtel (D-Wetzel), Senator Larry Edgell (D-Wetzel), and Mayor Keith Nelsen were all on hand for the ceremonies.

The design of the memorial was developed by Sons of the American Legion Commander Randy “Matt” Bland and rendered by the Magnolia High School Art Department. The memorial will be constructed using local contractors and volunteers.

The Wall of Honor at the War Memorial Building only has WWI and WWII Veterans listed and is also in need of repair. The new wall will cover the timeframe from WWI to the present, with space for future veterans.

The wall is to run from the sidewalk to the back of the lawn and will be covered by a roof. There will also be a sidewalk and benches, and the memorial will be lit 24 hours per day.

Marne Post #28 is still seeking donations and help from anyone who is willing to donate money or supplies. The donor levels are Gold (over $10,000), Silver ($5,000-$10,000), Bronze ($500-$5,000), and Friends of the Wall of Honor (under $500). All donors are to be recognized.

At Saturday’s ceremony, Bland stated that the goal was to have the memorial completed and dedicated by Veterans Day 2013, going as far as to say “You have my word it’ll be done.”

Invocation at Saturday’s event was given by William “Fuzz” Angus and remarks were also given by Commander Duncan Graham.

Wetzel County Commissioners stressed the importance of the project, while presenting the wall committee with a $20,000 monetary donation for the worthy cause.

“We’re very happy that we contributed to the project to honor those who served our country,” Commissioner Larry Lemon later noted on behalf of the commissioners.
