Marne Post #28 of the American Legion is going to construct a “Wetzel County Wall of Honor” to be erected on the south end of the Post #28 building. This “Wall of Honor” will name all Wetzel County residents who have faithfully served our country in all military branches of service.

The design was developed by Randy “Matt” Bland, rendered by the Magnolia High School Art Department, and is to be constructed using local contractors.

The Wall of Honor at the War Memorial Building only has WWI and WWII Veterans and is also in need of repair. Legion representatives also say it is also being disrespected and abused.

A few businesses have already donated, but more help is needed from anyone who is willing to donate money or supplies.

Wetzel County Commissioners wholeheartedly support the cause, with Commission President Don Mason and Vice President Bob Gorby stating that they believe the wall of honor is “a great idea,” and they support the project.

Commissioner Larry Lemon stated that the commissioners appreciate the efforts of all parties involved.

The wall will run from the the sidewalk to the alley and will be covered by a roof. There will be a sidewalk and benches, and the wall will be lit 24 hours.

The first community meeting will be June 29, 10 a.m., at the American Legion on Main Street. It is open to the public, who is invited to come and help make the wall a success.

The goal of the Legion is to have this fitting memorial completed and dedicated by Veteran’s Day 2013. The public’s help in this endeavor shows the continuing commitment of Wetzel County in honoring the sacrifices of county residents to the security of our great nation.

The Legion also needs help in getting the names of everyone who has served in the military.
