The fire alarm system at Magnolia High School in New Martinsville went off twice Monday evening around 7 p.m.

Principal Kathi Schmalz said she checked the building and said there was some sort of odor in the facility. “I wasn’t sure what it was,” said Schmalz.

She cleared the building and called the New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department. They arrived at the school, checked the building, and couldn’t find an origin for the smell or a reason for the alarm. It was thought that perhaps there might be some faulty detectors.

“There does appear to be some type of control issue that is causing the fire alarm to engage,” said Superintendent Diane Watt, who was also at the school during the initial investigation. She said there doesn’t appear to be any danger, but an electric company was at MHS Tuesday to look at the system.

“Everything will be taken care of,” assured Schmalz. “We always act on the side of caution.”
