Local residents Nancy Gregg and Nick Parsons are encouraging the community to attend a geocaching event, which is being held at the New Martinsville marina Friday at 6 p.m.

Geocaching can be compared to a scavenger hunt or a treasure hunt. Following exact GPS coordinates set up by other geocachers, participants can hunt for a geocache (container) hidden at that location.

The event is being organized by fellow local resident Dave Smith and is for novices and experienced geocachers alike. Gregg explains that the only expense involved in geocaching is for a GPS, with some participants choosing to use GPS applications on their mobile phone devices instead.

It is required that if a participant takes something from the cache, they leave something of equal or greater value in its place. Next, they are supposed to write about their find in the logbook located inside the cache. Gregg cites the website geocaching.com as a reliable and informative resource for information on the “game.”

Many participants use this site to log their experiences and search for geocache coordinates in their local area. The site also allows participants to create their own identification name.

Gregg states that the game, both an national and international activity, allows people to “spend the whole day, working together as a team.” She brings up another positive aspect of the game as well, explaining that a common rule is for participants to clean up the area where they are “hunting” for caches.
