Crash Breaks Vertebrae

By Staff | Apr 11, 2012

An emergency medical services worker attends to Lisa Shepherd, 50, of New Martinsville after an automobile accident at state Route 2’s intersection with Witten Lane in New Martinsville. At 1:17 p.m. Friday Andrew R. White, 25, of Spencer, W.Va., was attempting to drive west on Witten Lane across the highway. He was reportedly motioned across the roadway by a motorist stopped in the center, or left-hand southbound lane. However Shepherd was driving her 2009 Honda Accord south in the right-hand lane and collided with White’s 1996 Chevrolet Silverado.

Shepherd was taken to Wetzel County Hospital by her family and later taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown by Air Evac when they detected two broken vertebrae on the right side of her neck. However, her husband, Magistrate Tom Shepherd, said no surgery was needed. While she has some bangs and bruises and must have her neck immobilized for six to eight weeks, he said, “She’s doing good.”

White was cited for failure to yield right of way. Shepherd’s car was rendered disabled but White’s truck sustained only minor damages. (Photo by Miranda Stokes)
