Paden City Elementary School Music Teacher Shelia A. Aberegg was recognized as West Virginia Society of General Music Teacher of the Year during the Wetzel County Board of Education’s regular meeting Monday night.

Aberegg, who has taught in the field of music education for 27 years, was commended on her achievements, particularly her commitment to Wetzel County students. It was noted during the meeting that Aberegg makes a real difference in students’ lives and music education. The board extended their congratulations to Aberegg on receiving this top honor and presented her with a certificate commemorating the occasion.

The West Virginia Society of General Music Teacher of the Year Award is open to any general music teacher in the state who has demonstrated exemplary teaching practices and a love for her students. Such teachers are nominated by fellow music teachers, classroom teachers, or administrators.

In another matter, the board acknowledged receipt of the final written Audit Report for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2011, and declared the contents available for inspection by all offices and by the public. Treasurer Jeff Lancaster noted five Certified Public Accountants spent a week performing the audit and was proud to report that once again this year there were no audit findings in question. “There are a lot of people that go into making this happen,” Lancaster said. “We have a good staff.” Assistant Superintendent Jay Yeager added, “It’s a compliment to Mr. Lancaster and his staff when other counties call Wetzel County to see how we’re proceeding in financial matters.”

Along with personnel and routine matters, the board approved revisions to the 2011-2012 school calendar as recommended by the superintendent. Such changes are as follows:

May 25, which was originally designated as an Outside School Environment (OSE) Day, will now be the last Instructional Day for students, who will be dismissed early at 12:05 p.m.

May 29-30 are now Continuing Education (CE) Days and May 31 remains an OSE Day, but may be used as a flex day for Preparation for Closing.

June 1 remains an Instructional Support and Enhancement (ISE) Day, and June 4-5 remain OSE Days. June 6-7 will change to OSE Days, and June 8 remains a Preparation Day for the Closing of School/Last day of employment for 200-day employees.

Regarding important dates in the school calendar, the board accepted the following as commencement dates for each of the county’s high schools. It was also decided all board members would attend all of the graduations, with one member speaking during each ceremony.

Valley High School will hold its graduation ceremony on May 24 at 7 p.m. Board Vice President Bob Patterson will address the graduating class.
