Car Rear-Ends Bus Tuesday
BY?AMY?WITSCHEY Editor Thankfully a motor vehicle accident on state Route 2 in Steelton Tuesday afternoon involving a bus was not a major incident. New Martinsville Police Chief Tim Cecil said four of the 27 elementary school students on the bus were taken to area hospitals, but none of their injuries appeared to be significant. One child was transferred to Wetzel County Hospital and the other three were deferred to Sistersville General Hospital as the CT scanner at WCH was temporarily out of order. The accident happened at 3:13 p.m. when a Pennsylvania woman driving a Kia Sportage south on state Route 2 just south of Captain’s Quarters restaurant failed to stop for traffic and hit the back of Wetzel County Schools Bus 31. She was cited for failure to maintain control but her name is not being released at this time. Cecil said the front end of the car sustained damages, but the bus was rather unscathed. The bus was almost to its destination, The Villa apartments, where all of the children were to exit the bus. So the waiting parents all came to the accident site where officials signed each kid out to their parents or guardians. School Superintendent Diane Watt was at the scene and helped get the kids off of the bus. Also assisting at the scene were Cecil, NMPD Sgt. Steve Kastigar, Paden City Police Department, Wetzel County Sheriff’s Department, New Martinsville Volunteer Fire Department, and four area Emergency Medical Squads.
