Hundred News

By Staff | Dec 21, 2011

Well, we had a little bit of snow but hopefully any snow of depth will wait until after Christmas. But I know that the kids would really like some snow to get into. We have had some fairly cold temperatures and rain with ice.

Are you ready for Christmas? There is still time to do some shopping around town. Several stores offer some great items or there is always gift certificates

More and more lights are shinning at night around here. The Hundred Post Office added to their lights; Express Towing and Repair decorated; and there was a very nice lit tree in the window of the Mining School. Three more windows were decorated down Pennsylvania Street. There were a few that were decorated but not lit at night, so the town didn’t really benefit from them. There is still time to add your lights. It also would be grand if all of you would consider keeping your lights and decorations up until the New Year. That would really make the town look nice. And a great memory. It was even noted that in the trailer park near the Rt. 7 bridge most of the homes were decorated this year. There were still a few places that weren’t attended to this year, but perhaps next year. If everyone helped a little it would look really great. That is all ages-helping.

Have you seen some work going on at the old Joe’s Video? We’ve been hearing about it for a while now. It is being completely redone inside and we hope it will open in a few months. It is going to be a pizza place for kids and families and there is supposed to be more than that. We will all just have to wait and see.

Over by Long Drain Elementary School the county is almost finished with the bridge. It will be so great when it will finally be done. They were just starting on the guardrails today.

Also at Long Drain School, this Wednesday afternoon will be the time for the kid’s Christmas parties. Always lots of fun for them. Then on Thursday the school will have it’s Christmas Program starting at 6 p.m.. Parking is limited but it is worth it. The cost is only $1 for adults and $1 for any children attending that are not in the program. The money collected usually goes to improve the school’s playground. Remember that the kids will be out of school starting on Dec. 23 until Jan. 3.

The Hundred Public Library will be closed on both Dec. 24 and Dec. 26., so plan to stop in before, so you will have plenty to read.

Right now, I will list some of the new books we have received recently: “Our Bodies, Ourselves” by the Boston Women’ Health; “West by West” by Jerry West; “Red Mist” by Patricia Cornwell; “Explosive Eighteen” by Janet Evanovich; “V is for Vengeance” by Sue Grafton; “The Lady of the Rivers” by Philippa Gregory; “Bonnie” by Iris Johansen; “Longing” by Karen Kingsbury; “Kill Alex Cross” by James Patterson; “Shock Wave” by John Sandford; “My Maggie” by Rich King; and “Pearl Harbor” by H.P. Willmott. YA and kids: “Inheritance – Book #4” by Christopher Paolini; “Witch and Wizard – The Fire” by James Patterson; “Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Cabin Fever” by Jeff Kinney; “Home for Christmas” by Jan Brett; “The Pine Tree Parable” by Liz Curtis Higgs; “The Legend of the Poinsettia” by Tomie DePaola. This Wednesday, Dec. 21, Miss Amy and her Story Time kids will be talking all about the North Pole! Come and join her with stories, games, crafts, a snack, and more. This program is for kids of about three to five years. The following Wednesday, Dec. 28, there will be no Story Time.

Baby Boomers, do you have questions about Medicare or related issues? There is someone to help you. Lora Whiteman at the Wetzel County Committee on Aging has offices in both Hundred and New Martinsville. You can call her and leave a message for an appointment in Hundred, 304-775-2542, or New Martinsville, 304-455-3220.

To keep your kids and grandchildren busy with some fun, remember that Dec. 27 is Cut Out Snowflakes Day and the next day, Dec. 28, is Card Playing Day. And there are a lot of fun games to play like Go Fish, Old Maid, War, Mennonite Madness, and so many more. Remember these ideas are not just for kids. Try some-you just might like it!

Remember you are all invited to a Christmas Dinner at the Historic Alpine Theater on Sunday, Christmas Day. It will start at 1:30 p.m. bring a covered dish if you can and everyone is invited.

Also, Sweet Melissa’s will be open Saturday (Christmas Eve) from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. and then on Christmas (Sunday) they will be open at 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Remember that the library has special Christmas Book area for both adults and kids. There are a lot of great books at this time of the year. That help you get into the Christmas feeling. We also have several DVDs and VHSs for the kids and craft books. If you have not been to our town library, please stop in and start the New Year off with a good book!

We hope that all of you will have a nice Christmas. I know that mine this year is a lot better than last year’s thanks to many people and their prayers. Thank you and Merry Christmas!

Thanks for reading!
