Underwoods Earn WV Logging Award
Underwood Timber & Chipwood LLC, owned and operated by Stephen Jay and Richard Max Underwood, has been selected as West Virginia’s 2011 Outstanding Loggers. The Underwood’s operation is based in Smithfield and most work is conducted in Wetzel and surrounding counties. The West Virginia Forestry Association (WVFA) presents this award annually to recognize the outstanding work of logging professionals in the state.
Donna Reckart, WVFA President, states, “The Underwood’s crew is truly an asset to the West Virginia forest industry. Their crew exhibits professionalism and a commitment to safety throughout their operation. While they operate an efficient and productive crew, their jobs are always conducted in an environmentally conscious manner. They are to be congratulated for this outstanding accomplishment.”
Nominees are judged on safety practices, as well as community involvement and their use of Best Management Practices (BMPs). BMPs are soil erosion prevention measures that are used by logging professionals to minimize soil erosion and sedimentation of creeks and streams.
The West Virginia Forestry Association represents the state’s forestry community with more than 700 members that include foresters, loggers, private forest landowners, as well as businesses that produce furniture, lumber, flooring, building supplies, fencing, and paper.
