Channeling The Spirit of 1964

By Staff | Dec 10, 2008

Magnolia High School was filled with school spirit last week in preparation for the Big Blue’s football contest with Grafton High School for the Class AA State Title. The last, and only, time Magnolia won the coveted title was in 1964, so the school went back to the glorious year for inspiration. Not only did the students and teachers dress the part on Thursday, they also learned their subjects as if they were in that year and learned about the current events of 1964. Principal Kathi Schmalz, center, is holding a 1964 yearbook spread of the state title game. Pictured in a crowd photo is a five-year-old Coach Mark Batton sitting on his father’s lap, learning the ins and outs of the sport at an early age. While the Eagles weren’t able to win the title this year, they did earn the runner-up title and gain the experience of being in the final contest. The entire community is proud of their accomplishments. For more information and photos of the game, see page 1B. (Photo by Amy Witschey)
