Wetzel/Tyler Chamber of Commerce Hosts Community Breakfast
Wetzel County Chamber of Commerce Director, Sharon Cambpell hosted a gathering of guests to be part of the State of the County review by distinguished speakers. This is the third year that Mrs. Campbell has hosted a review of the county’s future in one form or another.
The open breakfast was an opportunity for members of the community to not only participate in the breakfast review, but it was an opportunity to experience the first-class breakfast prepared by students at the Wetzel County Technical Education Center. Chef and instructor, Gary Cardell along with students arrived at the center at 5:30 am to begin preparing the morning’s meal for the day’s guest. They prepared a buffet style breakfast with a broad selection of foods for all tastes.
Mrs. Campbell has been preparing for this gathering for several months, and the cost of the meals was covered by the Regional Economic Development Partnership Group. Valerie Piko, Program Manager was an essential part of the success of the mornings program.
Mrs. Campbell arranged to have a list of speakers that have an understanding of the future of not only the county, but programs that are state wide that will benefit Wetzel County.
Mr. Tim Hooper representing the State Treasurer’s office read a letter from Larry Pack, WV State Treasure. Next on the agenda was State Senator Charles Clemens. He gave his assessment of the state’s government in Charleston and how he sees the change in direction of the concerns of the legislature and a shift in priorities. He expressed his hopes that the direction will return to the work of the people and less concern on social priorities of some in elected positions.
Mr. Tony Martinelli, President, CEO, WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital and Reynolds Hospital. Martinelli told of his vision for the local hospital and how he plans to increase its ability to provide the best and latest technology in the prevention and treatment of medical issues.
Wetzel County Schools Superintendent, Cassie Porter gave an update on the progress of the plans to move forward with the construction of the county’s consolidated school.
Vice-President Wetzel County Commission, Carla McBee gave a broad review of programs the commission is overseeing within the county. McBee explained to the guest, the commission is very proud of the progress that has been made at the 4-H Camp with the opening of the walking trail and the Pickle ball courts.
Valerie Piko, Manager at Regional Economic Development Group, (RED). She updated the survey information gained from the county wide review, giving officials directions to aid their efforts to serve the needs of the county.
J.C. Kimble, Wetzel County Director of Technical Education, explained the amazing growth and advantages the center is bringing to the educational needs of the students in the county. He reported that the center’s growth in the last six years, has given students advantages that add to their academic programs in high school. Students can choose opportunities that give them real world skills, while adding to their academic knowledge.
The guest list covered local politicians, members of the business community and interested citizens. The event was well planned and gave those in attendance an understanding that Wetzel County realizes the opportunities the oil and gas industries are providing, and community members are stepping up and making plans for a bright future for all Wetzel Countians.
