A section of Jefferson Avenue is set to get repaved following waterline work that occurred a few years ago.

Paden City Council on May 5 approved hiring a contractor to repave that section of the road for $28,800. During a past meeting resident Wayne Nething complained about a long and narrow section of the street remaining unpaved since work was done about three and a half years ago. The resident suggested that the strip either be repaved or re-concreted. He said gravel placed in that section continuously washes out and makes a mess.

The city got an estimate to repave that entire section of street, not just the strip, after talking with other residents who believed the entire road needed work anyway.

A date for the work to begin was not mentioned.

Meanwhile, a resident Matthew Ferrebee returned to complain about a past sewer pipe issue on Helen Street. Ferrebee said he believed the city was still responsible for damage that had occurred in the basement of his daughter’s home in the past.

Mayor Clyde Hochstrasser informed the man that the city had once again turned a claim into the city’s insurance. After listening to Ferrebee speak, Councilman Bob Bell said he wanted the city to investigate Ferrebee’s claims and discuss it during the next council meeting.

In other matters, the city is expecting to see a 16 percent increase to its PEIA insurance. City Recorder Sheila Ervin noted the city for the past two years has absorbed increased PEIA hikes. Discussion on the anticipated new hike will be placed on the next meeting’s agenda.
