Teen Crossing W.Va. 2 On Foot Is Struck By Van

By Shelley Hanson - Staff Writer | May 7, 2025

A teenage boy who was struck by a vehicle while trying to cross W.Va. 2 in New Martinsville between 4 and 5 p.m. on April 27 is receiving treatment for several serious injuries at a Morgantown hospital.

New Martinsville Police Department Chief Tim Cecil said the teen was initially taken to WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital for treatment.

“A male juvenile was hit by a van by Captain’s Quarters restaurant,” Cecil said. “He was trying to cross the street.”

Cecil said the driver of the van did not flee the scene after striking the teen. He said he did not yet know what charges would be filed against the driver.

The teen’s mother, Ashley Paugh of Belleville, W.Va., said her 16-year-old son, Luke George, was the pedestrian who was struck during the traffic accident. She said he is receiving treatment at Ruby Memorial in Morgantown. He was transported there by medical helicopter from WVU Medicine Wetzel County Hospital.

“He has a broken neck, broken nasal bone and the front center of his skull and down the right side of his face is fractured,” Paugh said on April 30.

“He has a broken bone in his vertebrae; if he moves the wrong way he could be paralyzed or he could die. He is in an extreme amount of pain.”

Paugh said the driver responsible for striking her son has not been arrested. She claimed those involved with the accident have been “bragging” about what happened.

“The other kids that were there and witnessed it should not have had to go through that traumatic experience,” she added. “My son is very lucky to be alive right now.”

She noted he was in the city visiting his aunt when the accident occurred.

Meanwhile, Cecil said over the years there have been other cases of pedestrians being struck while walking along or attempting to cross W.Va. 2 in that area.

“We’ve had a lot of accidents there. We’re trying to work with the state road … to maybe get sidewalks to alleviate all of this,” he said.

Wetzel County Prosecutor Timothy Haught said on April 30 that no charges have been filed against the driver as “the matter remains under investigation.”

“The situation with respect to sidewalks, crosswalks in the area of West Virginia State Route 2 near Captain’s Quarters and the Villas is dangerous and my office has been requesting adequate sidewalks, crosswalks and other measures to protect pedestrians in that area for years,” Haught added.
