Hundred Sportsman Club Holds Fishing Tournament

Carolyn Mathews shows off the fish she caught during the derby in Hundred.
Last Saturday with heavy overcast skies, and a brief shower, an estimated 90 fishermen and their parents along with grandparents and others descended on the Hundred Sports Club for the 6th Annual fishing derby.
Club President, Buck Howell who has been in that position for 25 years was excited to see the large turnout of kids from the area. When asked why the club sponsored these events, he quickly responded, “It gets the kids and their parents out into nature for a fun time fishing.” He chuckled as he said, “And it gets them away from Xboxes and games. To watch them catch a fish makes it worthwhile for the club’s membership.
The event is open to the public and kids ages 2 through 17 may enter. Last year the event had eighty kids in attendance and fishing was good. In fact, a couple kids were so excited they slipped into the pond.
The club’s pond is open to members and their guests year-round. The area was first developed and made into a club in 1952. It has been going strong ever since.
On the second weekend in June the club will hold an encampment going back to the 1840s. Old time frontiersmen and women will reenact and display what it was like during those times in the wilderness.
President Howell explained that at the present time the club is making plans for an old-time turkey shoot a few weeks before deer season.
Howell wanted to thank the entire town of Hundred and the many sponsors whose generosity helped to make this fishing event possible. “Our community turns out every year to help make this program happen. The people of Hundred have always been supportive of club programs.”
