New Martinsville Rotary Club President Dan Mason and students Emersyn Glasscock and Matthew Scharf.

The New Martinsville Rotary met on Wednesday, April 2, at Quinet’s Court Restaurant in Downtown New Martinsville to discuss business, and welcome the April students of the month.

President Dan Mason opened the meeting introducing the students before turning the meeting over to Rotarian Chuck Clegg who spoke about attending a Rotary training class for (PET) President Elect Training held in Charleston at the Kawaha County Library.

Clegg said it was an interesting meeting with around 75 people in attendance, about half of those in attendance being newly elected Presidents.

The daylong session gave Clegg an understanding of the mission of Rotary, both International and here in our country. He learned that their primary Mission is to help eradicate Polio worldwide. The Rotary organization has 1.4 million members in over two hundred countries. Here in America, there are 36,000 clubs. West Virginia has 53 Rotary Clubs and they are made up of 18,000 members.

Clegg explained that his time in Charleston gave him an opportunity to meet several area members and make contacts who have invited him to speak at their organizations.

He said the class was to familiarize them with their duties when they take office in July. Also he mentioned learning some things about Rotary that he didn’t know prior to the meeting. Clegg said his goal when he takes over as President will be to increase membership, ensure guest speakers for the weekly meetings and provide projects for the local membership. He also mentioned that on April 16, the club’s meeting will be held at the Wetzel County Tech Center with a DNR officer as the speaker. Also the meal for the meeting will be served by the center.
