The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 officer, Jade, is slated to soon receive a new protective vest to wear while on duty.

According to the department’s social media, the department is set to receive the vest, thanks to a donation from Vested Interest In K9s, which is a non-profit organization.

“K9 Jade’s vest will be embroidered with the sentiment, ‘This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest In K9s.’ Delivery is expected within 10 weeks,” the department noted.

The vest is meant to protect the dog from bullet and stab wounds.

“Each vest has a value of $1,800, weighs an average of 4-5 pounds, and comes with a five-year warranty,” according to information from the department.

The charity was established in 2009 and has given out 5,707 vests to officer dogs across the country. Funding is made possible by corporate and private donations.

“The program is open to U.S. dogs that are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies,” department information notes. “K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.”

To date, the organization estimates it has donated about $6.9 million worth of vests. Those interested in supporting the organization’s cause can make a tax-deductible donation of one’s choosing at www.vik9s.org or mailed to: Vested Interest In K9s, P.O. Box 9, East Taunton, MA 02718. A single donation of $985 covers the cost of one vest.
