BOE Studying Track Resurfacing
During the February 25 board meeting, the members discussed the condition of the Magnolia track surface. It has been known for a period of time the surface does not meet necessary conditions for the track to be used as a sanctioned track for competition.
At the meeting, no members could remember when the surface was laid down on the present track. It is known the surface in areas has begun to pull away from the underlying asphalt base.
During the discussion, it was pointed out that Magnolia’s outdoor athletic areas have not received any needed major periodic upgrading. It was pointed out that in the last decade, money has been spent to upgrade facilities at Hundred, Valley and Paden City. No major upgrades or improvements have been done for the Magnolia outdoor sports complexes.
After discussion about the facilities and the upcoming consolidation, and eventually the new school construction. It was the conclusion of the board that attention must be given to the track area due to its use for several more years.
The cost of resurfacing the track with a rubberized surface is in the range of $423,000.00. Before any work can begin, it must first be determined if the sub-asphalt base is weakened and will not support just replacing the top surface. It was stated that core drillings of the surface and sub-surface must be done to determine the actions to be taken.
Replacement cost of the surface and sub-asphalt was not stated.
