NEW MARTINSVILLE – Wetzel County’s newly elected sheriff – Eric Daugherty – was sworn into service during a ceremony conducted Dec. 18 by Wetzel County Circuit Court Judge Jeffrey Cramer.

The ceremony was held at the Wetzel County Courthouse. Retiring sheriff, Mike Koontz, congratulated Daugherty on being sworn in via the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Department’s social media page.

Before becoming sheriff, Daugherty was serving as the department’s chief deputy. He had also been working as the New Martinsville School’s school resource officer.

The school and its students recently held a party of sorts to thank Daugherty for his service, noting that he would be missed.

On the school’s social media, Daugherty was thanked for all he did for the students and school. “As our NMS family bid farewell to our beloved NMS PRO, Eric Daugherty, we are filled with immense pride,” the school noted in the online letter. “Your unwavering dedication to our school has left an indelible mark on all of us.

“Through your time with us, you’ve taught us more than just the fundamentals of safety – you’ve equipped us with the confidence to face challenges and the awareness to navigate potential situations with care and vigilance.

“Your training and guidance have not only made our school a safer place but have also empowered each of us to take responsibility for our own security and that of those around us.”

The letter also wished him well, adding they are thrilled for him to take on his new role.

“Your leadership, integrity, and commitment to service make you the perfect fit for this next chapter,” the school noted. “We have no doubt that you will continue to make a profound difference in our community, just as you have here at NMS.”

He was given a special NMS Eagle T-shirt that states, “Honorary Eagle” in bold letters.

“From this moment forward, he will always be an NMS Eagle at heart, a symbol of strength, courage, and leadership that we strive to embody every day,” the letter continued. “Thank you for being our protector, our teacher and our friend. You will always have a special place in our hearts, and we look forward to seeing all the great things you will achieve as sheriff. Congratulations, and best wishes on this new journey.”
