Hornets Start Volleyball
First year Hundred Volleyball Head Coach Rebecca Goff is not only a novice to the game of volleyball so are nine of the 10 players she has on her roster. This is the first season Hundred has put together a volleyball team to compete with other schools.
“I don’t know much about the sport, but believe me it’s more than just getting the ball over the net,” says the first year coach. “The girls and I are working very hard in picking up the game, but with the help of assistant coach Roger Tustin and one of my senior captains, Cheyenne Myers, we are moving ahead of the game quite nicely.”
Myers, the only girl on the team that has any experience when she played her freshman year in North Marion, is also one of the Hornet captains along with the coach’s daughter, Mercedez Goff.
Myers is a front line hitter who can and will get off the ground to smack the ball, while Goff will also be a setter at times as well as a front line hitter. Joining them on the front line is senior Shayna Tedrow. Outside hitters include senior Hayley Hayes and junior Emily Ebert. Setting up these hitters is freshman gymnast Paige Shriver. Shriver is very active and has a lot of athletic ability and will complement the front line players with sets along with their back line hitters.
The rest of the squad is freshmen Alexandra Hayes, Dakota Kuhn, Erika Hunter, and Deseray Cowart.
Coach Goff wanted to express her thanks to everyone who has made it possible for the Lady Hornets to field a volleyball team, especially the Hundred Athletic Boosters,, Athletic Director Rex Rush, and HHS Principal Richard Ochsenbien.
Hundred kicked off their volleyball season against Clay-Battelle Aug. 31 and will next play at East Richland Christian, Ohio, on Sept. 6. You can catch the Lady Hornets inside the Hornets Nest, Sept. 20 against Clay-Battelle at 5 p.m.
